Diversity and Accessibility at SXSW!

I wanted to share with the NMA team a couple of images from SXSW.  I attended the acclaimed festival which is held annually in Austin, Texas to celebrate emerging and established creators in film, music, and interactive arts.  I had the privilege of presenting on a panel that discussed diversity in the entertainment industry.  You can see the names of the people with whom I presented.  We had a good turnout (and of course a diverse audience) and I am pleased to say that there was CART (real time captioning) for the audience and for myself and an ASL interpreter for the audience.  This was the first time that I experienced accessibility from a major festival or conference that wasn't specifically geared towards people with disabilities or the Deaf and hard of hearing.

I also attended a panel on accessibility, with panelists Sharron Rush, Executive Director of Knowbility.org, Celia Hughes, Executive Director of VSA Arts Texas, Elise Whitworth, a Deaf web designer, Desiree Castaneda, a blind musician, and Barbie Parker, a performance interpreter for the Deaf.  They had ASL interpreters present for both audience members and Elise, and Desiree gave a demo about accessible websites.  Their presentation provoked a lot of questions from the audience about universal accessibility and the commitment that it takes from us all to engage in it.  It isn't easy, as we in the NMA know, but isn't it great to know that we are working on it?
